Irish people don’t like winners

I have felt this way for a long time and with Harrington winning The Open on Sunday the beast reared its ugly head again. Paul O’Connel alludes to the issue in an interview at the launch of the new Munster jersey yesterday.

“For too long in Ireland we have been ‘cap in hand’ when it comes to sport but now there is a greater sense of confidence. I don’t know when it changed, Roy Keane definitely had it, Sonia O’Sullivan also and now you look at Derval O’Rourke, who is incredibly driven and apologises to no-one.”

When discussing the documentary “Reaching for Gory” most of my family and felt O’Driscoll came off as cocky and arrogant. I’ve watched it a few times and just don’t see that at all. It is time for Ireland to mature and realize we can be World Champions all you have to do is beat the fifteen guys in front of you.
